The famous hotel for mountain climbers will be restored on the slope of Mount Elbrus

The oldest and best known hotel for climbers on the slope of the highest mountain in Europe at an altitude of over 4 thousand meters will be restored — «Shelter of Eleven», which burned down in 1998.

Plans to build a new hotel in place of the destroyed one were announced last year. Now it is known that its design will be as similar as possible to the building, pictures of which will be recognized by most Russian climbers.

«Our task is to preserve the main features and originality of the mountaineering base architectural style. That doesn’t mean we’ll build a full copy. We will try to recreate a recognizable design, while using modern technologies and materials to ensure a comfortable and safe environment for climbers and staff of the Ministry of Emergency Situations», said General Director of Kavkaz.RF, Andrei Yumshanov.

The renovated «Shelter of Eleven» will be located at an altitude of 4,100 meters above sea level, the same place where its predecessor stood. It will be a four-story mountaineering hotel with an area of more than a thousand square meters. The maximum capacity of the building is up to 120 seats.

The rebirth of the legendary hotel has been awaited for a very long time. According to Viktor Ershov, an experienced guide on Elbrus, the demand for overnight accommodations on the slope remains high. Tourists use hotels for various purposes. Some people just want to spend the night at altitude, enjoy the views of the mountains, walk on the glacier nearby, where it is safe. Climbers here undergo acclimatization, snow and ice training. The ascent to the top of Mount Elbrus begins late at night, and the higher the hotel is, the lower the altitude that you have to reach on the day of ascent.
