Hirudotherapy is a method of treatment of different diseases using medicinal leeches (Hirudo medicinalis). This method has been known since ancient times and has been popular in traditional medicine of many peoples of the world.
Medicinal leeches attach to the patient’s skin and release biologically active substances contained in saliva when biting. These substances have the following impact:
- Hirudin is a substance, preventing blood clotting, diluting blood and improving blood circulation.
- Destabilase is an enzyme, cleaving fibrin filaments, preventing the formation of blood clots and promoting the resorption of existing blood clots.
- Hydrolases are enzymes, stimulating metabolism and accelerating tissue regeneration.
- Biogenic stimulants and anesthetic agents, such as histamine-like compounds, reduce pain and inflammation.
These properties make hirudotherapy effective in treatment of many diseases of cardiovascular system, musculoskeletal system, nervous system and even cosmetology problems.
