Russian Tree of the Year grows in Kislovodsk
The famous Chaliapin fir became the winner of the “Russian Tree of the Year 2022” national contest .
The needle-leaved beauty that remembers the voice of the great Chaliapin won by a wide margin, overtaking the “Pearl of the Tobolsk Forest” pine from Tyumen and the “Tsaritsa Pine” from the Buzuluksky Bor National Park.
The fir, now famous all over the country, grows within the territory of the “Chaliapin’s Dacha” literature and music museum, next to the entrance to the main building of the museum. In 1917 it was a guest house, rented by the legendary Russian singer Fyodor Chaliapin, who visited “the waters” with his family. At that time the fir tree was already growing near the house, and it immediately got named after Chaliapin.
Today the 133 year old fir is 27 meters tall and its girth is about one meter.
“Russian Tree of the Year” is chosen every year since 2017. The purpose of the event is to draw attention to the environment and to encourage people to take care of it, especially of trees. According to the contest conditions, only trees listed in the National Register of Old-Growth Trees, as well as those with the status of “Tree, a Monument of Wildlife” are allowed to participate.
