Therapeutic mud: history and modern times

Mud Baths named after N.A. Semashko is a popular tourist and resort site. It is famous for its «antique» architectural style and the sculptures at the entrance, that you can often see in tourists’ photos. The architectural elements of the building are made of Kislovodsk dolomite. The entrance to the building is decorated with sculptures of Gods of Ancient Greece — Asclepius (god of medicine) and Hygeia (goddess purity and hygiene).

A building with history

At the end of the 19th century, Caucasus Mineralnye Vody was a very popular resort, so it was decided to update its infrastructure. A new building for mud baths was built in Yessentuki, designed by architect E.F. Schrötter, inspired by ancient Roman baths. Local dolomite was used, the building was designed for 180 treatment beds. The building was opened on July 22, 1915, and its first visitors were wounded servicemen of the First World War.

During the Civil War, the building was seriously damaged, but later it was restored. Mud Baths can accommodate up to 2,500 patients per day. The «Caucasus» method of mud therapy (recognized as unique) is used here. Solid mud is used in the form of applications.
