How do people with diabetes stay healthy during autumn and winter?
Temperature drop, seasonal exacerbation of viruses and decreased immunity have a particularly negative impact on the well-being of people with diabetes. Zheltova Tatiana Nikolaevna, the Kazakhstan Sanatorium’s endocrinologist, told us what people with diabetes should do to stay healthy during autumn and winter.
Healthy diet
The colder it is outside, the more frequently we unconsciously choose sweets and starchy foods as a snack. The reason for this is that our body requires energy to maintain optimal heat exchange. Excessive consumption of carbohydrates increases the amount of sugar in the body. When you have diabetes, it’s important to carefully consider your diet to prevent the condition from worsening and gaining excess weight. Patients with diabetes are prescribed a special diet by the Kazakhstan Sanatorium’s specialists. This useful habit formed during the stay in the Sanatorium will help to maintain good eating habits at home.
Physical activity
Cold weather leads to poor circulation, especially in the lower extremities. People’s physical activity is reduced in winter. The Sanatorium’s rehabilitation program includes remedial gymnastics, therapeutic swimming and walks in the park on specially designed routes — terrenkurs. You can replace these activities with daily walks, or, for example, stop using the elevator when you return home after your vacation.
Drinking regime
Even healthy people need to drink a sufficient amount of fluid, otherwise you can suffer problems with the gastrointestinal tract, deterioration of the skin and brain activity. Water helps the digestive system process food better, which is vital during the winter months when many people tend to overeat.
Recent developments
The Kazakhstan Sanatorium, located in Yessentuki, specializes in the treatment of metabolic diseases since its creation. The resort has more than 40 years of experience in rehabilitation of patients with diabetes. In 2023 the Kazakhstan Sanatorium has introduced a new method of diabetes treatment. This method of treatment includes diet therapy, treatment with Yessentuki-4 mineral water, carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulfide baths, massage, therapeutic exercise and oxygen therapy in an oxygen chamber. This therapy helps to restore disturbed metabolic processes and minimize weather impact on your health.
